On Monday, January 7, 2019, Barbara Humbert Handy passed away at the age of 95 years old. Born in El Paso, Tx. on December 13, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Colonel Frederick Humbert and Frances Sperry Humbert. For many years she lived the life of an army brat in many states, including a trip to China to visit her mother’s family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Phillip W. Handy and her son Phillip W. Handy, Jr., as well as her sister, Mary Ann Humbert Luther, and her brother Dr. G. Fred Humbert.
She attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, Nc. and graduated from William & Mary in 1945, where she met her husband Dr. Phillip Watkins Handy, who was a dentist in the United States Navy. After a yearlong internship in Dietetics at Walter Reed Hospital, she married her husband in 1946 and moved to Lynchburg where she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Oakwood Garden Club and Lynchburg Woman’s Club. She was an active volunteer on numerous boards in the community and a member of Boonsboro Country Club. She and her husband traveled extensively to many faraway places.
She is survived by her daughters, Martha Handy Pollard and Quen Handy Chaffin (Tom) of Lynchburg, Va., sister Martha Humbert Riley of Oakland, Ca. and sister-in-law Barbara Jean Humbert of Pahrump, Nev., as well as by four grandchildren, Jamie Pollard (Amy) of Ashburn, Va., Thomas Chaffin (Allison) of Roanoke, Va., Beth Kendall (Jason) of Lynchburg, Va. and Kathryn Hendricksen (Mike) of Harrisonburg, Va. She is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 5 to7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home 220 Breezewood Dr. Lynchburg, Va. 24502. A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Handy will be held at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, with The Rev. Kimberly B. Glenn officiating. Interment will be 10:00 am at Spring Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church of Lynchburg, Virginia Episcopal School, the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
