Robert Harry Alvis, Jr.

Robert Harry Alvis, Jr. 82, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, January 14, 2010.  He was the husband of the late Ann McKenna Alvis for 62 years.

Born April 25, 1927, Harry was the son of the late Robert Harry Alvis and Lorraine Noel Alvis.  He was a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church.  Harry was a Navy veteran of WWII.  He was past president of the Fort Hill Lion\”™s Club, a member of Masonic Marshall Lodge #39 and a Shriner.  He was a self-employed real estate developer and property appraiser.

He is survived by his son, Robert Harry Alvis, III (R.H) and his wife Merle, grandson Bob Alvis and his wife Suzanne, and two great grandchildren, Anna and Kate.  Also surviving are his sister, Claire Alvis Phipps of Wilmington, NC, and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was predeceased by his sister Frances Alvis Hulbert.

Before moving to Runk and Pratt, Harry and his wife Ann were lovingly cared for by Lisa Ferguson and Alisa Adams.  The family wishes to thank Lisa and Alisa, all of his caregivers at Runk & Pratt, and the hospice nurses for their loving care, compassion and support during his illness.

The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, from 1:30 \”“ 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, 2010.  A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2010 in Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Phillip Waltz and the Rev. Janet Hawkins officiating.  Masonic Rites will be conducted by Marshall Lodge #39.

In lieu of flowers,  the family suggests donations be made to Fort Hill United Methodist Church, 106 Oakridge Blvd., Lynchburg, 24502 or Hospice of the Hills, 3300 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24503, or the charity of your choice.
