Amherst, Virginia-On Thursday, November 7, 2019, Wilma Jean Holmes passed away on her birthday at the age of 72, surrounded by her loving family.
Wilma was born to Bascom Stonewall Vandyke and Ruth Maxine Vandyke on November 7, 1947 in Beartown, West Virginia. She spent her childhood in Vandyke Hollow, Va, with her two sisters and extended family, working to manage the family farm and care for the community. Wilma became a beautician in Buchanan County, VA and married her soulmate John Kelly Holmes, Sr. on March 31, 1967 after just three months of courtship. Wilma flourished in life as the community hairdresser, coal miner’s wife, chef extraordinaire, and loving mother to many. Wilma and John later moved to Amherst, VA to spend their retirement with their two sons and their families. There, Wilma made priceless memories with her family and friends during holiday parties, back-porch conversations, tending her many gardens, and countless late- night bonfires. Her love and devotion to her family and friends is reflected in the people they have become today.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Bascom and Ruth; her husband, John. She is survived by her two sons, John Kelly Holmes, Jr. and his wife, Robin Long Holmes of Madison Heights and Kevin Scott Holmes of Madison Heights; her sisters, Phyllis Ann Looney of Oakwood, VA and Doris G.
