Shaheed Abdul-Salaam, also known as Walter Morton, Jr., but best known as “Chippy”, departed this world on May 22, 2021. He was born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia and being an incredibly charismatic and joy-filled person, he was well known and loved. He graduated from Charlottesville High School, played basketball with the city of Charlottesville, performed statewide with Sam the Beast from the East, and spent 16 years in the U.S. Army as a Human Resources Specialist.

Throughout his Army career he served in Savannah, Georgia; Hanau, Germany; Fayetteville, N.C., and Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was well known as the comedian of the family with a heart of gold and the life of the party. He made a huge impression on everyone he met. Because he was so beloved, two memorial services will be held. One in his hometown Charlottesville, VA, Saturday, May 29th at the VFW, 1170 River Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22901, and the other in his last place of residence, Lynchburg, VA, Sunday, May 30th, at the New Dearington Baptist Church, 400 Smyth St., Lynchburg, VA 24501.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Morton, Sr.; his mother Cornelia Smith Morton Dorsey and a son DAunte. He leaves behind two brothers, Rodrico Turner and T’rel Morton; two sisters, Tonya Breidenbach (Jason) and Territa Dorsey-Porter (Rick); 4 sons, Justin Morton (Tawanna) and their children Zamyriah, Jay’Von, Julian, Justin, Jr., Jeremiah, Zacari and Jay’Sun; Jahmal Morton and his children Jahmya, Jaedon, Jolon, Emirah and Ahmir; Jarrante Salaam and Jerimiah Salaam; and 1 daughter Jamie Morton (Demonius) and their children Ahmari, Demonius, Jr., Demarius, Dai’Jahna and Jamiera; and special friend Quandra Trent.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
