Linda Clark Obenour, 78, died peacefully, December 2, 2020, at Liberty Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lynchburg after an extended stay at the Lynchburg General Hospital. Linda was born in Knoxville, Tennessee August 8, 1942 to the late Charles C. Clark and late Lillian Frances (Clark) Davis Nichols. Linda graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts degree having completed her degree in three years. She then attended Duke Medical School graduating in 1966 with a Doctor of Medicine degree, being in the top 10% of her class. Her internship and residency in Pediatric Medicine at Duke University were completed in 1968. Deciding on Ophthalmology as her specialty, she went on to complete her Ophthalmologic Residency in Houston, Texas and New York City. As the first woman Ophthalmologist in the country, Linda practiced Ophthalmology in Houston, Texas for 35 years. Linda was elected as a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons in Ophthalmology in 1993. While in Houston she cared for such distinguished clients as President George H. W. Bush as well as many of the US space program astronauts. She later practiced in Goldsboro, N.C. until she retired in 2012. In addition to being a physician, she was an accomplished pianist.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Ann Tate and husband David L. Tate, (Forest, VA), niece April Tate Tishler, husband Jeremy Tishler and their children Jackson and Harper (Warrenton, VA) and nephew Charles David (Chip) Tate and his children Charlotte and Nicholas (Waco, Texas).
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Knoxville, Tennessee.
