Lillian Christine Amos Riddle and her three brothers and two sisters were raised in separate foster homes following the premature deaths of their parents. She attended the pre-nursing program at Longwood College and graduated from Lynchburg General Hospital’s School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. The State Board of Nursing Examination awarded her their Blue Seal for the high score on the licensing Exam. She completed numerous additional nursing and administration continuing education courses.

After several years of office and hospital practice, she joined the Lynchburg Training School and Hospital, a Virginia facility for care of the mentally retarded and severely physically disabled. During her thirty-year career there, she progressed from Staff Nurse to Nurse Instructor, Assistant Director of Nursing, and Registered Nurse Manager. The Virginia Nurses Association recognized her with its 1982 Akers Award for outstanding nursing in the fields of mental health, mental retardation, and physical disability, as well as her community service.

Mrs. Riddle was a member of Kedron Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and a member of multiple committees. She frequently volunteered in the Gladys community in diverse roles, such as a teacher for the rescue squad and with the Red Cross Blood mobile, PTA, Bicentennial Committee, and Untied Way. She was an avid vegetable and flower gardener, won many awards for flower arranging and seasonal decorating with the Garden Club, and often supplied flower arrangements to the Church.

Mrs. Riddle was the wife of the late Dennis Byrd Riddle, a highly respected teacher and principal of Campbell County Schools and a disabled U. S. Navy veteran. Surviving family members are: brother Charles Amos; son Barry; son Barney, his wife Susie and their son, Matthew; niece Gail Midgely, Catherine Hamlett, Kathy Riddle, Debbie Alexander, Lucille Stemkowski, and Tammy Tamburello; and grandnieces Crystal Gee and Lindsay Alexander; nephews Marshall Riddle, Jr., Wayne Riddle, and George Riddle, and Johnny Rosen; and, the children of Margaret Nelson, her dearest and adolescent friend, Brenda Irving, Sandra Dobson, and Tommy Nelson.

The Rev. Brian Reynolds will conduct a funeral service at the Kedron Baptist Church on

Saturday, July 6, 2019 at 2 p.m., followed by a reception in the Church’s social hall. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Kedron, the Salvation Army, the Disabled American Veterans, or your favorite charity.
