Kathleen “Kitty” Dawson Snead, 97, of Lynchburg, died January 23, 2018. She was the wife of the late George Murrell Snead, Jr.
Kitty was born on November 27, 1920, in Lovingston, Va., daughter of the late Hiram Montgomery Dawson and the late Kathleen Hill Dawson.
Kitty grew up in Nelson County, Virginia where she spent many wonderful days at her grandfather’s farm Edgehill. She graduated with a degree in Home economics from Madison College in 1941 and continued her career in dietetics at The University of Virginia Hospital and The Touro Infirmary in New Orleans. She joined the Red Cross in 1945, serving in Italy for about a year, and while there was given a Boxer puppy (Lady), beginning a lifelong love of dogs. In 1947 she met and, after a six month courtship, married Army Captain George Snead, beginning the next great adventure of her life…raising five sons as an Army wife. Kitty supported and mentored hundreds of Army Signal Corps spouses, led family support groups, and often “adopted” young families as her own earning her a special place in their hearts that extends to this day. Kitty, George and the boys lived in many places including Alaska, Kansas, New Jersey, Arizona, and Europe, but always returned to her beloved Virginia. She taught school for many years and worked as a realtor with Long and Foster in northern Virginia, coming to Lynchburg some years after her husband retired as a Brigadier General in 1973. She was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, and actively involved with the Williams Home, Westminster Canterbury, the DAR, the Jones Memorial Library, Hillside Garden Club and, along with her husband, was an avid supporter of the Lynchburg Academy Center of the Arts. Kitty and George bought a small home at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Virginia in 1992, and spent many pleasant days there, close to several sons, daughter-in-law’s, grandchildren and their many friends, prior to full retirement at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg.
She is survived by her sons: George Murrell “Mike” Snead, III and wife Suzanne H. of Moneta, Va., James Montgomery Snead and wife Vicki H. of Charlottesville, Va., William Murdock Snead and wife Kathryn K. of Crestview, FL, and Edward Winn Snead and wife Kathryn M. of Fairfax, Va.; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and a wealth of wonderful memories far too numerous to list.
Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John Penn Snead, and her brother William Estes Dawson.
A memorial celebration of life service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg on February 17th, 2018 at 4:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service.
