Julia N. Smigiel

Julie Nemeth Smigiel, 85, of Bedford, VA passed away on February 2, 2018 at Carriage Hill Memory Care Center in Bedford after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born on May 16, 1932 in Kulpmont, PA. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Rudy Smigiel; her parents, Anna and Andrew Nemeth and a sister, Mary Anne Nemeth.

Julie is survived by her daughter, Linda S. West of Bedford; grandson, Chris West of Bedford; three grandchildren, Hannah, Callie and Levi West also of Bedford; sister, Anna Lechniak and her husband, Walter of S. Williamsport, PA;  two sisters-in-law, Lillian Karycki of Camp Hill, PA and Fran Gregory of Harrisburg, PA, also numerous nephews and a niece.

Julie had a huge personality and always had a smile on her face. She adored her grandson and great grandchildren. They were her light. Heartfelt thanks to Amedysis Hospice Care for all the love and attention given to Julie. She was a member of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Bedford since her move from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1968.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church with Father Salvador Añonuevo  officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford.
