Judith Claiborne Feild Gager, a retired librarian, died March 10, 2019 at Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg, Va. where she had made her home for the past 15 years with her husband, Forrest Lee Gager, Jr., who survives her. Born January 29, 1921 at the home of her Lewis grandparents in West Point, Va., and reared in Gloucester Court House, Va., she was the daughter of the late Richard Bernard Feild and the late Marion Lewis Feild.

She attended Hood College and graduated from Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Va. In 1996 she earned a master’s degree in library science from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. She was part of the group who worked to found Amherst County Public Library and its first director. She was employed in the Alumnae Office at Sweet Briar College as bookkeeper for the alumnae fund and co-editor of the alumnae magazine, and served also as associate librarian at Wicomico County Public Library, Salisbury, MD. She closed her library career with twelve years as cataloger at Lynchburg Public Library.

She served as an ensign in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve during the latter part of the Second World War. In Lynchburg she volunteered at Daily Bread and at the Emergency Fuel Assistance Program. Hiking on the Appalachian Trail and on other paths in the Blue Ridge Mountains was one of her passions, as was attendance at chamber music concerts. She enjoyed writing and met often with friends in the course of pursuing this hobby.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two nieces, Jane L. Feild, of Palmyra, Va. and Carole F. Osvalds, and her husband, Viesturs, of Charlottesville, Va.; a nephew, F. Lee Brown, of Gloucester County, Va.; two step-children, Judith Perlman and Brian Gager; and three great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith C. Vogelback; her first husband, Arthur L. Vogelback; her sister, Martha F. Brown, and brother-in-law, Fred L. Brown; her niece-in–law, Margaret S. Brown; her brother, Judge Herbert I. L. Feild, and his wife Barbara.

Special thanks go to the nurses and staff on the sixth floor of Drinkard, particularly her aides Gwen, Gigi, Mimi, Jay, and Tiffany.

At Judy’s request there will be no ceremony of remembrance.  Contributions in her memory may be made to Ware Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 66-7825, Gloucester, Va. 23061 or to the Fellowship Fund at Westminster Canterbury, 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24503.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
