Juanita Layne Johnson, 86, of Madison Heights, peacefully completed her journey of life early Saturday morning, June 15.

The Savior she loved and served for many years is no longer “by faith” but has become a reality.

She was the wife of the late Bill Johnson, Sr, also of Madison Heights. Born in Winston Salem, NC, on July 3, 1932, she was the daughter of the late William and Nannie Layne and is also preceded in death by three sisters, Claire, Olie and Mary and 2 brothers, Orville and Carl.

Juanita retired from Central Virginia Training Center and was a teacher to special needs Geriatrics. After retiring she spent time ministering to people in her church, which she dearly loved attending. She was a big Southern Gospel music fan and attended a lot of Southern Gospel Quartet Conventions. In her leisure time she also gardened and did freezing and canning and loved cooking. She also enjoyed doing crafts and crocheting as a hobby.

She loved her family and has left behind a wonderful godly heritage to her grandchildren and great grandchildren and a heartwarming tapestry of many fun and happy memories. If you asked the grandchildren, they all would say top of the list would be her homemade sourdough bread and homemade banana ice cream. Other fond times would certainly be playing crochet, Thanksgiving dinners yearly in her basement, and when they were young, having Gma scratch their backs when sleeping over.  She was a fantastic godly grandmother who loved them fiercely ❤️

Juanita fought an 8-year battle with Alzheimer’s but continued touching lives even on that journey. What she talked about regarding her faith, she lived and never talked badly of anyone.

She was a Proverbs 31 woman who always gave glory to the Lord for everything and that would be her desire for us left behind.

She is survived by one son, Bill Johnson, Jr and his wife Diane of Stuarts Draft, three grandchildren, Jeremy Johnson, of Stuarts Draft, Leah Rockey (Nate) of Charlottesville and Lydia Wills of Midland, Texas. She is also survived by her three precious great grandchildren, Brielle Rockey, and Greyson and Everett Wills. There are several nieces and nephews left behind who were a special part of her life’s journey.

A Celebration of Juanita’s Life will be conducted at Temple Baptist Church in Madison Heights on Wednesday, June 19, with Pastor Bill Johnson and Pastor J D Surbaugh officiating.  Visitation will be from 11 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. and the service at 1 P.M. There will be no graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Aglow Prison Ministries which her son and daughter in-law are involved in. Address is PO Box 10157, Lynchburg 24506 or can be made online at their main website.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Madison Heights, is assisting the family, (434) 929-0055.
