John William “Bill” Nance, Jr, 72, of Lynchburg, VA, passed away at his home from Parkinson’s complications on Sunday, April 4, 2021.

He was the younger son of the late John “Buck” Nance and June Snow Nance.  He was born in Lynchburg on September 28, 1948, and was raised in Bedford.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from the Navy Fleet Material Support Office in Mechanicsburg, PA, enjoying “six Saturdays and a Sunday”.

Bill graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in English.  He loved college basketball, especially his Wahoos.  A special thank you to Tony Bennett and the 2019 team for winning the NCAA Tournament.  In between laughing and crying after the win, Bill said “I’m so glad they won in my lifetime, I’ve been waiting almost 50 years”.

Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan (McComsey); his son, Taylor, of St. Augustine, FL; his brother, Robert and wife, Diana, of Corvallis, OR; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Doug and Mary McComsey of Earlysville and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any Parkinson’s research organization.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Oakwood Cemetery in Bedford with the Rev. Troy Mays officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home Bedford on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.

Susan, we're so sorry for your loss. The old tailgate crew of Jim Nutter, Bobby Crickenberger, and Don Redden were texting this morning about our tailgating days with you and Bill. May God's peace and strength be yours. Love and hugs from the 460 Flamethrowers tailgating gang.
