Jillian Cody Jones, “Jill”, 75, of Lynchburg, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, June 5, 2018.
Born in Flushing, New York, she was the daughter of the late John and Francoise Cody. The eldest of five siblings, she was raised primarily in Connecticut and had most fond memories of summers spent in Cape Cod, sailing and traveling New England with her parents and brothers John (“Jack”) Cody Jr, Douglas Cody, Scott Cody and sister Judy Demint.
After graduating from Sweet Briar College in 1964 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Jill married James Conrad Jones, a native of Lynchburg. The town remained her home for 54 years. They had 6 children who adored her, Ellen J. Wells of Duck NC, Chrissy J. Brady of Southern Shores, NC, Susan K. Jones, Frances J. Bryant, James C. Jones Jr, all three of Lynchburg, and John C. Jones (Ashley) of Watersound, Fla.
She is also survived by 8 grandchildren; George, Charles and Jack Brady Jr, Stephanie and Chad Bryant, Jeffrey Wells Jr, and Avery and Henry Jones.
In 1988, Jill furthered her education. Earning an Associate degree in Accounting from CVCC, she became a Master Tax Advisor for H&R Block and an Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service for 28 years. As a tax professional, she was remarkably dedicated to her work for commercial and individual clients while cherishing many special friends and coworkers, who loved and supported her tremendously throughout the years. In addition to her devotion to her own six children, Jill was director of the Nursery at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, and cared for little ones of the parish on Sunday mornings for 30 years.
True to her most humble and kind nature, community service and charity were also important to her. She was recognized for years of outstanding service and dedication to the City of Lynchburg and Voter Registration. Jill also gave of herself, to several charitable organizations like the American Heart Association, Girl Scouts of America, and as a board member and volunteer for her children’s PTA’s.
A life long learner, Jill was a voracious reader, always with an open book or crossword puzzle. She was brilliant at Bridge, enjoyed her favorite game show, Jeopardy, and never missed a question! She followed professional tennis and politics, was a lover of animals, and of course children. She was a treasure to all and her gentle soul will be forever loved and deeply missed.
The family would like to extend special gratitude and sincere appreciation to Dr. David Paulus of New London Family Practice. The family would also like to thank Centra Hospice and Generation Solutions for their service and compassionate care they provided.
Saturday, July 7 at 11:00 a.m., an Inurnment service will be held at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church columbarium garden for the family. A reception will follow at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr. in Lynchburg from 12:00-2:00 p.m., welcoming friends and family to honor and celebrate the life of Jill.
