Howard Milton Markus, 93, of Smith Mountain Lake, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at The Summit. He was the loving husband of Lois (Bertram) Markus.

Born in Chicago, Il April 21, 1925, he was the son of the late Henry J. Markus and Lillian (Havel) Markus. Major Howard Markus proudly served his country, and retired from the U.S. Marine Corp after 22 years. He was a veteran of WWII and Korea. Howard attended Northwestern University and graduated from Purdue University. He also retired from Fairfax County Public Schools as a civil engineer. Howard was a member of Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Smith Mountain Lake Retired Military Club, and Smith Mountain Lake Homeowner’s Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three daughters: Nanette Richardson and husband, Ray, Carla DeLoach and husband, Greg, and Pamela Bridges and husband, David; nine grandchildren: Philip Richardson and wife, Katherine, Meredith Richardson, Rebecca Richardson, Morgan DeLoach, Madelynne DeLoach, Meleah DeLoach, Max DeLoach, Cameron Bridges and wife, Kristin, and Courtney Bridges; one great-grandchild, Ian Richardson; one niece, Nancy Turner.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by an infant sister, Libby Francis Markus, and two brothers, Henry Jacob Markus, Jr. and Leonard Glen Markus.

The Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Ecumenical Parish Monday, May 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service.  Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

The family request memorial contributions be made to Trinity Ecumenical Parish.
