George Slade, 77, passed away in Lynchburg, Virginia on Sunday, October 10, 2021, with his immediate family by his side.

At his request, a private service will be held.

He was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1944.  George liked hunting & fishing and was an avid sports car enthusiast.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.

Mr. Slade served honorably 26 years in the United States Navy, Nuclear Submarine Service retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.  He served under Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, known as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy.”

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy Slade; son, Kevin (Tammy) Slade and daughter, Denise Turner, and three grandsons, Samuel Slade, and Baxter & Gunther Ewers.

Those wishing to honor his life can make a donation in his name to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg is assisting the family.

Dear Nancy, family and friends of George’s; on behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at George’s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow “Bubblehead” leaves on Eternal Patrol. George was a Corvette buddy for a few years. We enjoyed cruising with him as he enjoyed cruising with Virginia Corvette Club and hanging out a Cruise Inns and Car Shows. Kevin, Tammy & Sam - So sorry to hear of your loss. Though I never met your father, sounds like he had a full life with lots of stories. I sure most of the stories included serving this great Nation for 26 years. May you find comfort in the memories you made with your dad. We'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers.
