Frank Anthony Russell, age 81, of Bedford, VA, peacefully passed on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 17, 1936, Frank graduated from Central Catholic High School. He later enlisted and proudly served in the United States Air Force, training as an Air Traffic Controller. This sparked a lifelong love of aviation and he continued his career at Washington Dulles International Airport when it opened in 1962 until he retired in 1986. He married his loving wife, Carol, in September of 1964, later relocating to Manassas, Virginia, where they raised three children. After retirement, the couple moved to Warrenton, VA where he enjoyed “life in the country” while pursuing his dream of piloting small civilian aircraft.
Frank contributed to his community as an active member of the Knights of Columbus, first at All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas, VA, and later at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Warrenton, VA. Additionally, through his work with the Boy Scouts of America, he shared his love of the outdoors, and enjoyed many a camping trip in one of his favorite destinations, Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
In his final years, he was a resident at English Meadows Elks Home in Bedford, VA. Always quick with a joke, Frank was well known for his wry sense of humor and his passionate, inquiring personality.
Frank is survived by his two daughters, Colleen (Tim) Kutish, and Sharon (Alex) Saenger; his son, Keith Russell (Virna); five grandchildren, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ann McHale Russell; mother, Ella May Dunn Russell; father, Herman Lee Russell; sisters, Margaret Russell (Anthony) Manno and Famie Russell (Raymond) Myers; and brothers, Charles M. (Mary) Russell and Herman L. Russell.
A Catholic service, followed by burial with military honors, will be held at Quantico National Cemetery on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either English Meadows Elks Home of Bedford, VA or Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, VA. Arrangements made by Tharp Funeral Home of Bedford, VA. We are grateful for the many caregivers who touched his life, most recently English Meadows and Good Samaritan Hospice.
