Elliot Schewel

December 15, 2019

Share your Memorial with Family & Friends

I want to express my condolences to the Schewel family in the passing of Mr. Elliot Schewel. I found out about his passing tonight at a college alumni supper. Mr. Schewel's father, Abe Schewel, and my father, Gus Berman, were friends for many years. The only thing missing from Mr. Schewel's obituary was his being a Master Mason for over 50 years. I remember being present at Marshall Lodge #39, A. F. & A. M., in Lynchburg when Mr. Schewel was presented with his 50-Year Veteran's Emblem.

It was my great honor to know Elliot as a friend and as my Senator. I met him when I lobbied for education issues and then had the privilege to work on his campaigns as the coordinator for phone calling in Bedford County. I took my niece to visit the General Assembly and he graciously introduced her on the floor of the Senate even after that practice was frowned upon. She thought he was cool. I always thought he was kind and a true Southern gentleman. My prayers go out to his family.

Dear Mike, Steve, and Susan. Your father was a true gentleman and a man that truly loved his community. I've always enjoyed speaking with him and will miss his wisdom. Shalom.

Please accept my condolences at your father’s passing. One of the great highlights of my life was serving as his legislative aide during three General Assembly sessions. Elliot was a terrific role model and I continue to use lessons learned from him 40 years ago.

Elliot was a legend in the Virginia Senate (in later years, his colleagues simply called him “Senator”). For me, he was a hero and a dear friend over my adult lifetime. With the possible exception of his late wife, Rosel, Elliot did more “good things” for Lynchburg than anyone I ever knew. They were a formidable team – now together for eternity………We will not see their like again! Our sincere condolences go out to Steve, Susan, Mike and all the grandchildren. Bill and Nancy Blackwell P.S. Nancy was Rosel's pottery-mate at The Academy for many years.

I, too, admired this Titan of Lynchburg! What a loss to the community. Sending much love to Mike, Steve, and Sue and families. Sincere deepest sympathies.

I adored Elliot Schewel! He was a jewel of a man and an admired politician who served in VA well with his gracious servant leadership. However, I’d love to share a sweet little story about him perhaps none else knows. As a senator he was often invited to ride in a convertible in the Bedford Christmas Parade as was our hometown Delegate, Lacey Putney. Elliot once confided to me it was humbling to be in the parade with Lacey as everyone in Bedford shouted “Hi Lacey” and few, if any, shouted “Hi, Elliot”. So every year thereafter as the parade as passed the Bedford Public Library where I was Director I never missed the opportunity to be on the sidewalk and loudly shout “Hi, Elliot” and he always smiled back at me grateful for at least one enthusiastic fan in Bedford. Grateful for a life well lived and a gentleman loved and admired by many.
