Dennis Gilliam, 74, of Lynchburg, VA, died Tuesday, November 24, 2020.  He was the husband of Janet Marie Verdinella Gilliam for 51 years.

Born Monday, July 15, 1946 in Lynchburg, Dennis was a son of the late Roy Edward Gilliam and the late Ruby Louise Bragg Gilliam.

In addition to his wife, Dennis is survived by his children, James Gilliam and his wife, Sheila, and Kimberly G. Hartless and her husband, John, six grandchildren Brice Bhalla (Kimmie) Cody MacArthur (Caitlyn), Chad Gilliam, Jacob Hartless, Nikolas Hartless, Waylon Hartless. three great grandchildren Abygail Hartless, Willow Hartless, Amelia Huntley and two great grandchildren due in March 2021. Sisters Brenda Joyce Stading, Shirley Dale Gilliam and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother Joseph William (Billy) Gilliam, sister Betty Louise Gilliam Lawhorne.

Dennis was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  His greatest joy and number one priority in life was his family. Dennis was a big kid, full of life and his presence always filled the room.  He was an avid reader had a passion for baseball and loved all sports.

He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Dennis was retired from Rock Tenn Paper Mill, and after retirement spent over 10 years driving a bus for Lynchburg City Schools and umpiring baseball for Lynchburg Little League.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to St Jude’s Children Hospital, Salvation Army or Lynchburg Area Food Bank.
