David Alexander Ferguson, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  He was married to his beloved wife, Earleen Brooks Ferguson, for 60 years.

Born in Appomattox, VA, on May 1, 1931, he was the son of Bernard and Sally W. Ferguson.  He attended one year of college at the University of Richmond on a football scholarship and then served in the US Army from 1953 until 1954 during the Korean Conflict where he was stationed in Germany. He graduated from Lynchburg College in 1957 with a degree in Business Administration and joined Craddock & Terry Shoe Corporation as an industrial engineer. David spent 31 years at Craddock & Terry until the company reorganized.  He spent the remaining years of his career in insurance, various service positions, and as the property manager and moderator for the Lynchburg Baptist Association.

David thoroughly enjoyed helping others, whether it was supervising Habitat for Humanity house projects, coordinating youth groups for numerous rehabilitation and construction projects, or coaching the church softball team.  He was an avid sports fan who played football and baseball in high school and college; had the highest league average for bowling while serving in the Army; enjoyed playing golf with his nephew and putt-putt with his daughter; and loved watching all types of sports either in person or on television.

As a long-time member of Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, David served as a deacon, trustee, head of the Baptist Mens group, and the director of Sunday School for many years.  He also chaperoned or drove the van for endless children, youth, seniors, recreation and mission trips.  David was also a faithful early morning exerciser at the YMCA Downtown for over 20 years.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by one daughter, Debby Ferguson Singleton (and husband Mark) of Cullowhee, NC and two granddaughters, Skyler and Mckayla Singleton. Preceding him in death, was his youngest daughter, Delena, who passed away in 1991.

The family wishes to thank the staff of English Meadows in Bedford for the care and kindness shown to David over the past two years as he resided in their facility.  Additional thanks and support go out to Medi-Home Hospice staff and nurses for the comfort care they provided over the past two months and to Generation Solutions staff for their ongoing assistance.

The celebration of his life will be held at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, 5225 Fort Avenue, on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A fellowship meal will be served immediately after the service.  The family will also receive visitors at their home (108 Holcombe Road, Lynchburg, VA) later that afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the YMCA of Lynchburg (Downtown), Habitat for Humanity, Lynchburg Baptist Association, Compassionate Friends, Chestnut Hill Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice.

Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
