Betty Patteson McNally, 81, of Forest, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 21, 2021.
Born on February 2, 1940, in Lynchburg, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ashby Smith Patteson. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Edward Brockenbrough McNally.
Betty grew up in Lynchburg and graduated from E.C. Glass High School and Longwood College, where she received a degree in elementary education. Betty taught in Henrico County before returning to Lynchburg, where she taught at Garland Rhodes Elementary School. In 1964, she married Edward Brockenbrough McNally. She was a volunteer throughout her life for many organizations, including Poplar Forest and James River Day School. Betty was a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she served as a board member, Sunday School teacher, helped with the alter guild committee, and was instrumental in starting the St. John’s Day School. She enjoyed raising and spending time with her three children and adored her seven grandchildren. Betty had a love for gardening and Labrador Retrievers. She always looked forward to playing duplicate bridge, especially with her many wonderful friends.
Betty is survived by her three children: Edward Brockenbrough McNally, Jr. (Sheryl) of Roanoke, VA., Margaret McNally Keller (Herschel) of Lynchburg, VA, and Ashby Patteson McNally of Wilmington, NC. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Edward Brockenbrough McNally, III, Anne Mims McNally, John West McNally, Carter Braxton Keller, Morgan McNally Keller, Macon Elizabeth McNally, and Marguerite Patteson McNally.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Westminster Canterbury and Hospice for their loving and compassionate care for both Betty and her family.
